Access to swimming pools has historically been limited for Black and Brown communities, resulting in a higher risk of drowning incidents. Recognizing this disparity, I founded a swimming class specifically designed for Black and Brown families to learn how to swim. The aim was to provide a safe and inclusive space where families could learn this essential life skill together.
With the goal of ensuring the safety and well-being of families, we hired two experienced instructors to work closely with each family for a duration of seven weeks. This personalized approach allowed for individual attention and tailored instruction to meet the unique needs of each family member.
The success rate of our swimming class has been nothing short of amazing. Families who have participated in our program have not only learned how to swim but have also gained confidence in the water. By equipping them with the necessary skills, we are empowering them to enjoy the water safely and without fear.
As part of our commitment to inclusivity, we provide swim caps that accommodate all types of hair. This ensures that individuals with different hair textures can comfortably wear a cap while swimming. Additionally, we supply each participant with a pair of goggles, further enhancing their experience in the water.
By offering this swimming class, we are not only addressing the issue of limited access to swimming pools but also creating opportunities for families to bond and enjoy recreational activities together. Swimming is not only a life-saving skill but also a source of joy and relaxation. It is our belief that every family, regardless of their background, should have the opportunity to experience the benefits of swimming.
Through our efforts, we hope to reduce the number of drownings within Black and Brown communities and promote water safety for all. By providing a supportive and inclusive environment, we aim to empower families with the skills and confidence they need to enjoy the water safely.
